ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg (JFGH) is a multi-function nonprofit organization serving individuals and families of all faiths, ages, and abilities. Headquartered at the beautiful Alexander Grass Campus for Jewish Life, which is owned and operated by JFGH. The campus is also home to Jewish Family Service of Greater Harrisburg, Silver Academy Day School, and the Jewish Community Foundation of Central Pennsylvania. JFGH not only serves as the Jewish Community’s primary convener and advocacy organization, but it also operates the Harrisburg JCC (including its Symons Family Fitness Center, Brenner Family Early Learning Center, Summer Day Camp, Senior Adult Club, and more). JFGH is committed to serving both the Jewish and broad community in a manner consistent with the Jewish value system, which encompasses the universal values of service and loving kindness. JFGH has an annual operating budget of approximately $6.5 million and a staff of approximately 100 dedicated employees.
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the President/Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Director of Finance and Accounting is responsible for overseeing and directing all financial activities of JFGH, including accounting functions related to the General Ledger, Accounts Payable and Receivable, budgeting, financial planning and reporting, cash flow analysis and financial audits. This position provides both analytical and methodological support to their team, works on ad-hoc reporting and analysis as needed, and is also responsible for the monthly close process - including reserve account reconciliations and variance reporting. This position works closely with the President and CEO, other members of the executive staff and the lay leadership, in assuring that the JFGH operates in a fiscally responsible fashion, and in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements that furthers the overall mission and objectives of the JFGH.
The incumbent must be detail oriented and well organized, have the ability to efficiently and effectively handle multiple projects simultaneously and have the ability to adapt to changing priorities. This position requires good independent judgment, initiative and excellent leadership and administrative skills.
This is a full time, in-person position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Accounting Manager, Development and Financial Systems Manager and an Accounting Specialist report to this position.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Direct and assist with the ongoing operations of the JFGH’s accounting and financial reporting functions, including general ledger, financial statement preparation, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing and collection, payroll, bank reconciliation, and tax return preparation.
- Process the payments for employee benefit insurances, unemployment compensation funding and 403b plan participant contributions.
- Verify payroll and employee benefits are applied correctly on the general ledger.
- Manage, process and reconcile the accounts receivable between JFGH and other community agencies.
- Manage the accurate and timely reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
- Prepare month end journal entries.
- Ensure that the month end close process is completed before the end of the subsequent month to keep financial reporting current.
- Examine accounting records, including financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformance to standards defined within the organization.
- Develop and monitor the JFGH’s annual operating and capital budgets, engaging the other members of the agency’s leadership team as inputs into the development of such budgets.
- Assist and provide guidance, as needed, to the Accounting Manager with monitoring and forecasting cash flow and cash requirements, and make recommendations to the President and CEO, the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees.
- Maintain and update the chart of accounts as necessary.
- Monitor accounting procedures to identify efficiencies and control weaknesses and recommend new internal control policies and procedures in response.
- Prepare financial statements and ensure relevant financial data is presented to the President and CEO, Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees.
- Oversee business policies and accounting practices.
- Serve as the primary liaison to the JFGH’s external auditors to ensure that good systems of internal control are established and that the annual audit is completed on a timely basis.
- Prepare audit schedules and supply information requested from the CPA audit firm in preparation for and during the annual audit of the organization.
- Administer the JFGH’s insurance programs assuring that appropriate risk management techniques are in place and that the assets of the agency are properly protected.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise, train, schedule and assist in the evaluation of all department staff.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures for department staff to ensure consistent performance standards and protocols are performed, safety and security measures are followed and to promote a high degree of customer service.
- Maintain and enforce agency policies and procedures.
- Hold regularly scheduled staff meetings to establish and monitor department goals and expectations.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Attend Bi-monthly Board meetings and committee meetings as required.
- Attend staff meetings as requested.
- Regular attendance and punctuality is required.
- An ability and willingness to work evenings as needed.
- Conduct yourself in a professional manner and always follow workplace behavior standards and policies, as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Other duties and special projects, as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- B.S. in accounting, finance or another business-related field required.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in accounting, with knowledge of fund accounting, financial reporting, budget development, accounts payable and receivable and general ledger.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP) and ability to generate GAAP-compliant monthly and annual financial reports.
- Working knowledge of and ability to abide by IRS regulations.
- Experience working in the nonprofit sector is highly preferred; working knowledge of nonprofit accounting is required.
- At least 1-3 years supervisory experience is highly preferred, with demonstrated ability to effectively manage others.
- Strong working knowledge of and technical proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of products.
- Prior experience with Financial Edge accounting software is preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to respond effectively to multiple tasks, priorities and deadlines; meticulous attention to detail and follow-up.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship building and leadership skills and the ability to represent the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Strong written and oral communications skills, including high proficiency of the English language.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
