JOB OVERVIEW
The Operations Director is responsible for developing and implementing business processes that ensure the smooth execution of synagogue operations and events. This role oversees the administrative, events, member support, and volunteer engagement management functions to deliver an effective, efficient, and welcoming and positive experience for members, staff, and visitors.
The Operations Director reports to the Executive Director and manages the kitchen team. This role works closely with the Executive Assistant to the Senior Rabbi and the Education Coordinator/Clergy Assistant and provides administrative support to the Chief Financial Officer.

FLSA Status: Exempt ; Regular schedule: 4 weekdays and Saturday AM.
Compensation: $80,000 - $90,000 plus benefits: medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 403B, Paid Time Off, and holidays

Adath Jeshurun Congregation was founded in Minneapolis in 1884 and is the oldest affiliate of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism west of Chicago. Our vibrant congregation consists of 1000+ households, with members ranging in age from 0 to 103, and opens many doors to Jewish life inside and outside of our building. Difference is a good thing. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Administrative Management (35%)
- Create, maintain, execute, and continuously improve office-wide workflows, systems, and procedures.
- Manage office budget, including vendor services, maintenance, and supplies.
- Maintain office services, equipment, software, and supplies, including vendor management and purchasing.
- Oversee organization of conference rooms, shared office spaces, and prepare workspaces for new employees.
- Provide administrative support to the Chief Financial Officer.
Event Management (35%)
- Develop and maintain the synagogue's master calendar, collaborating with clergy, staff, and lay leaders.
- Serve as the primary staff member overseeing logistics for Shabbat services, holidays, and major events.
- Direct the congregation's catering, private events, and building rental functions, including managing internal and contracted staff. Meet service level and revenue expectations.
- Ensure coordination between event organizers, facilities staff, kitchen staff, and accounting staff for seamless execution and follow-up.
- Maintain, communicate, and ensure the implementation of catering, event, and building use systems and policies.
- Act as the primary point of contact for internal and external event stakeholders.
- Identify, maintain, and work closely with contract event managers.
Member Support Management (20%)
- Manage the main phone line, email inbox, mail, and doorbell, ensuring all are handled in alignment with service level expectations, strong customer service, and within the bounds of financial controls.
- Maintain accurate and organized digital files and update the member database (ShulCloud).
- Serve as the first point of contact for members and guests.
Volunteer Engagement (10%)
Recruit, support, and manage hospitality and administrative volunteers, including:
o Develop and execute strategies to attract and identify potential volunteers
o Conduct interviews and background checks to ensure suitability, then provide comprehensive orientation and training to new volunteers.
o Match volunteers with appropriate roles based on their skills, interests, and availability, considering the synagogue’s needs.
o Provide ongoing guidance and support to volunteers, addressing concerns and ensuring their positive experience.
Shared Cultural Duties and Responsibilities
- Actively support the principles of the Conservative Judaism Movement.
- Actively support the Congregation’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, racial justice, and anti-racism. Conduct all activities with a high degree of cultural competency.
- Maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with colleagues, clergy, lay leaders, and community partners.
- Articulate Adath Jeshurun’s desired image and position when representing the Congregation to internal and external audiences.
- Contribute to building a cohesive, respectful, responsive, and productive staff environment that demonstrates the Congregation’s values and mission.
- Actively participate in all-staff meetings, trainings, and other meetings as requested.
Minimum Requirements
- At least five years of experience in office or administrative management
- At least one year experience working with events
- At least two years of experience managing staff (either direct reports of dotted lines)
- At least one year experience with sourcing and vetting vendors and contracted services
- Strong fluency in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Experience:
- Experience managing an approved budget of revenues and expenses
- Experience setting and implementing business processes
- Experience with QuickBooks, customer relationship management software, and productivity tool
- Knowledge of Jewish traditions, holidays, and synagogue life.
