Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey (“Federation”)is a non-profit philanthropic organization
dedicated to creating a vibrant Jewish community in northern New Jersey. Federation cares for those in need, deepens engagement in Jewish life, and strengthens the bonds among Jews in the northern New Jersey area, in Israel, and around the world. Its primary functions are community planning and allocations, financial resource development, and leadership development.
Position Summary
The Director, Major Gifts will cultivate and secure significant donations to Jewish Federation of
Northern New Jersey. This position is an integral part of the development team, working to
determine effective strategies for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of new major
gift prospects, including growing a young leadership program. Incumbent will manage a portfolio of 100 major gift donors and prospects with a capacity for an annual gift of $10K+. This individual
reports to the Chief Advancement Officer.
Responsibilities
• Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward new and current prospective donors,
managing a personal portfolio of approximately100 donors and prospects.
• Identify prospects for targeted programmatic areas of the organization and develop compelling proposals for support.
• Develop leads from others within Federation, and from the broader philanthropic community in northern NJ to create a donor cultivation plan to grow major gift pipeline.
• Coordinate an effective program for recognition, involvement, and stewardship of major and
special gift donors in coordination with the Chief Advancement Officer and the FRD staff focused on stewardship experiences: Craft series of annual touch points to recognize anchor supports and major donors through the King David Society Reception & the Major Gifts Dinner.
o Develop and implement communication strategies to share with donors the impact of their gift.
• Oversee JFNA Young Leadership Cabinet initiative: collaborate with colleagues as necessary to
maintain a list of prospects; manage recruitment process and ongoing engagement of Cabinet members.
• Take on special projects at the assignment of the CEO and CAO and ensure they are carried out to a high level of professionalism.
• Work in coordination with endowment department to maximize a donor’s impact in his/her
lifetime and beyond through legacy and Donor Advised Fund opportunities. Accurately update and
maintain major donor/prospect information and activity in donor database system.
• Staff missions for high net worth prospects and donors to showcase the work of Federation and cultivate relationships between participants and professional staff.
Qualifications and Skills:
• MA in business or public administration or similar equivalent
• Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a resource development role, with a focus on major
gift fundraising.
• Successful track record with personal solicitation in the $10K - $100K range.
• Significant fundraising experience within the Jewish communal field, or another similar
organization requiring sophisticated fundraising efforts.
• Demonstrated understanding of the complexity of the volunteer/professional relationship and
success managing those relationships in an effective and professional manner.
• Strong management and leadership skills.
• Capacity to manage confidential information and use discretion and good judgment.
• Ability to manage complex, sensitive issues and situations with tact and great skill.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently, but also integrate and lead
teams.
• Previous experience with fundraising databases and the ability to utilize data strategically.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.
• Personal commitment to Jewish values and knowledge of Jewish traditions.
• Flexibility to work evenings and some Sundays.
• Must be able to travel, including internationally, when needed.
• Extended period of time sitting at a desk and working on a computer screen.
