What you’ll be responsible for:
You will be responsible for providing legislative research, policy analysis, coalition engagement, mission planning, municipal agency rulemaking, testimony, written reports, municipal legislative updates, and administrative support for the Jewish United Fund’s (JUF) local government office (located in Chicago but serving Cook, Lake, and DuPage Counties, and municipalities throughout the region). You will also lead our municipal advocacy on a portion of JUF’s policy priorities portfolio, which includes, but is not limited to, disability policy, behavioral and physical health, addressing antisemitism and other forms of hate, immigration, education, child care, older adults, gun violence prevention, voter access, security, capital investments, and nonprofit regulation.
What you’ll be doing:
- Monitor the status of local policy priorities, attending and reporting on meetings of various municipal bodies, as well as coalition meetings and committee hearings. Research and serve as lead on key policy issues, as determined by supervisor, and make recommendations on policy advocacy and bill development.
- Draft issue briefs, position papers, factsheets, testimonies, articles for JUF’s magazine, Municipal Updates, correspondence, and engagement with elected and appointed officials. Draft action alerts for JUF Board members, other affiliated lay leaders, and JUF network of agencies professionals. Share analyses of proposed ordinances, resolutions or regulations. Work closely with JUF and its agencies to identify potential legislative priorities and help troubleshoot any identified municipal agency related issues.
- Assist in planning advocacy opportunities. This includes identifying key policy priorities, setting up lobby visits, researching and booking speakers, training participants, arranging programming, drafting and preparing materials such as: talking points, policy papers, biographies, and other background information for participants.
- Help develop and coordinate Government Affairs public meetings when municipal issues are relevant to the meeting.
- Help oversee workload and projects carried out by policy interns.
- Assist with the development of content for the annual policy agenda.
- Coordinate invitations to municipal elected and appointed officials to attend special JUF events.
- Support JUF Campaign and mandatory campaign-related activities as needed, including monitoring and updating relevant data in Salesforce database.
What you need to succeed:
- Bachelor's degree in political science, history, or related social sciences field.
- Legislative affairs or nonprofit policy experience preferred, including experience working with coalitions.
- Demonstrated interest in Jewish communal affairs, through volunteer or professional capacities is preferred.
- Demonstrated interest in the range of JUF policy priorities.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office Suite products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks and projects at once and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Requires the exercise of discretion and independent judgment.
- Capable of working independently, demonstrating initiative.
- Excellent interpersonal, team building, organizational, and written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to travel throughout the Chicago metropolitan area when necessary.
