Summary
The Director of Curriculum & Instruction (DCI) is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of the educational program related to the curriculum and instruction for General Studies (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Executive Functioning, etc) in the Lower School, Kindergarten to 5th grade. As part of the administrative leadership team, the DCI plays a central role in the success of the lower school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pertaining to Curriculum:
- Ensures quality curricular and instructional design and implementation.
- Works with each grade’s team to develop high-quality scope & sequences of curricula that meet and exceed Florida standards of education.
- Refers to & analyzes various testing data along with teachers to evaluate student achievement, curricula, and instructional practices.
Pertaining to Team Focus:
- Meets regularly with K-5 General Studies teachers both as teams and individually to prioritize and maximize clarity in the implementation of specific curriculum and instructional practices.
- Observes and coaches teachers to improve instructional practices, and personalization methodologies in alignment with the school’s educational visions and best practices in education: station rotations, small group instruction, FAR Cycle implementation, special education strategies, and accommodations.
- Collaborates with K-5 teachers to
- help them create high-performing teams of educators.
- create a system that ensures unit plans are backward-designed with enduring understandings, standards, authentic assessments, rubrics, reflections, and other items highlighted in the curriculum mapping program.
- organize and coordinate grade level and department meetings to effect horizontal and vertical integration and articulation of the instructional program throughout the Lower School.
- Collaborates with the Lower School Admin Team, implementing cycles of curriculum mapping and review to evaluate & improve curriculum.
- Creates opportunities for collaboration amongst and between departments.
Pertaining to Instructional Focus, Support & Growth:
- Holds and communicates high expectations to all Lower School staff for planning and curriculum implementation.
- Coordinates weekly department meetings (and more if needed) to increase teacher involvement, incorporating teacher feedback, data, and other measures to improve the educational program, when appropriate - and ultimately builds teacher leadership capacity.
- Assists the Lower School Director in the teacher evaluation process.
- Assists teachers in the personalized professional growth plan process for continual professional growth.
- Observes and coaches teachers regularly offering insights for the enhancement of effective instruction.
- Plays a significant leadership role in fostering professional growth and building staff morale.
- Partners with local agencies and other organizations to improve all curriculum and instruction strategies.
- Communicates with the Lower School Admin Team & CAO regularly to assess and monitor student achievement.
- Trains and orients staff members on curriculum during the summer and ongoing throughout the academic year.
- Researches the latest trends and developments in all areas of education, interprets for staff, and recommends, as necessary.
- Demonstrates current knowledge of, and the ability to apply broad-based curricular designs and instructional technology applications that support the diverse learning needs of students.
- Collaboratively plans effective staff development programs that improve teaching outcomes and student learning (e.g., methods, skills, commitment, etc.)
- Collaborates with the Lower School Admin Team in creating staff development and in-service activities for educational staff.
Pertaining to Teachers New to Scheck Hillel
- Facilitates staff selection and orientation processes.
- Communicates high expectations and provides support to improve staff performance (e.g., observations, consultations, meetings, etc.)
- Implements a structured onboarding process that walks teachers through scope, sequence, and desired outcomes while familiarizing them with instructional resources.
Pertaining to Materials, Publications, and other items:
- Monitors textbook and supplementary materials selection used in educational programs.
- Researches and recommends, with teacher (and student) input, services needed for sufficient management of the educational program.
- Establishes relationships with textbook distributors, and explores open-source resources, and online options to maximize efficiency with classroom resource expenditures.
Pertaining to Policy Development and Implementation:
- Assists in the development and enforcement of policies and administrative expectations.
- Implements administrative guidelines/procedures relating to curriculum and instruction.
- Provides input in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating the effective operation of the school.
- Assists in the development and implementation of the school’s strategic plan.
- Implements strategies and time-frames to accomplish organizational objectives.
- Communicates expectations, provides guidance, and shows an active interest in student progress.
- Helps staff resolve problems that impede student participation in appropriate learning activities.
Pertaining to School Culture:
- Establishes an optimum culture for learning within the school
- Establishes strong working relationships with co-workers and functions as part of a cohesive team
- Collaborates with building administrators to develop a curricular vision for the school

Qualifications and Abilities - The following personal characteristics and skills are essential for successfully performing assigned duties.
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree in education/related field
- At least 2 years in an administrative role in a K-5 school environment
