Position Summary
The Director of Fitness is responsible for all aspects of Fitness Center operations programming, personal and small group (SGT) training, group exercise classes, personnel management (including hiring, supervision and performance management), budgeting, scheduling Fitness floor staff, and overseeing new member onboarding .
A primary responsibility of this and all other jobs at the JCC is to ensure by
whatever rational and reasonable means necessary that each and every member, guest and
visitor leaves the JCC feeling just a little better than when they arrived.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Fitness Center
- Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates all instructors, floor staff, personal trainers, and other part-time staff
- Works with staff to meet departmental and organizational goals
- Creates fitness floor staffing schedule based on fitness center needs and within budgetary guidelines
- Available to assist with elevated member questions and concerns reflecting our core values in every interaction
- Schedules ongoing safety, customer service and other pertinent training sessions for staff
- Maintains all cardiovascular and weight equipment and ensuring a clean environment and all equipment is in perfect working order
- Communicates consistently with members through e-mails, newsletter, internal signs and website
- Promotes new Fitness Center Programs and events and work with Communications department to create marketing materials and strategies to help increase revenue and add value to the JCC member experience
Programming
- Develop, implement, supervise and evaluate a comprehensive and creative schedule of classes and programs that meet the needs of our community
- Keep informed of important and relevant trends and programs in the community that can be appropriately adapted to our needs
- Responsible for creating and monitoring programs and initiatives in JFIT
New Member On-Boarding
- Works with Director of Membership to schedule all new members for on-boarding appointments
- Oversees and monitors effectiveness of new member onboarding and reviews monthly with General Manager
- Ensures all new members complete a goals assessment and availability form
Admin
- Responsible for tracking certifications for all trainers ensuring all are current
- Processes fitness departments bi-weekly payroll
- Attends agency and fitness center staff meetings/training and development
- Works collaboratively across departmentally to achieve Fitness goals
- Maintains logbook of repairs, communicates with the service company, the members and staff about the status of the equipment repair
- Manages repair expense line
- Other Duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or a related field;
- 2-3 years experience personal training or working in a fitness environment;
- CPR/AED & First Aid certification (if not current obtained within 3 months);
- Personal training certification in through ACSM, ACE or NASM required
- Group Fitness certification preferred
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate and develop staff
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Functional knowledge of MS Office applications and the ability to learn proprietary software
- Demonstrated ability in fitness testing, evaluation and risk screening
Interpersonal, Customer Service & Communication Skills
- Requires ability to effectively communicate JCC mission to staff, members. vendors and volunteers
- Requires high-level skills in customer service/member care
- Exemplifies personal qualities of integrity, credibility and unwavering commitment to the JCC’s mission
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment. The position requires high mobility, standing, walking, bending and sitting. Must be able to climb steps, bend and move. Must be able to lift, carry or move significant weight (ie, weight equipment in excess of 100 pounds).
