PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Institutional Giving Officer possesses sophisticated communication and research skills and serves as a key capacity builder on ADL’s development team. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced organization that is experiencing growth, and will skillfully handle a range of responsibilities, including portfolio management, proposal writing, prospect and donor research, strategy development, and data analysis and management. The person in this position will report to the Director, Institutional Giving and will work closely with the national development team, as well as regional Development Directors and program staff.
Responsibilities
Primary:
- Work closely with ADL development and program staff to develop and deliver customized proposals and reports for unrestricted and program-specific grants.
- Cultivate, build and solidify relationships with new and established institutional donors [with a focus in the XXXX Division]. Directly solicit and close gifts, in coordination with regional partners as appropriate, from institutional donors and prospects.
- Develop comprehensive proposals for grants of $50,000 to $2,000,000+ and prepare reports and other communication material for institutional donors. Modify templates based on donors’ interests. [Leverage templatized proposals for solicitations under $50,000.]
- Maintain a personal portfolio of donors with specific financial goals, outreach and solicitation strategies and stewardship.
- Work with Senior Directors, Philanthropic Engagement and regional team members, as well as program leads, to secure effective leadership participation in fundraising and prospecting of institutional donors.
- Establish relationships with program colleagues to develop subject matter specialty in at least one ADL program area, to support sophisticated proposal and report templates managed by the Grants Services team for use by development colleagues.
Secondary:
- Maintain an expectation of excellence in both written and verbal communications, as well as a dedication to superior customer service with an emphasis on relationship building.
- Initiate and prioritize donor research activity. Analyze and make decisions about giving capacity, and formulate and implement a rating system for individual donors and prospects.
- Perform complex analyses and organize information to identify philanthropic patterns, affinities, and relationships among individuals and foundations. Create concise, accurate, and timely research products using an array of data (biographical information, financial data, news, and philanthropic history).
- Stay abreast of fundraising trends and issues, maintaining knowledge of available training and educational opportunities to develop necessary skills.
- Play a key role as data strategist in the development of qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies.
- Review the accuracy of electronic records and other organization information on donors and prospects and facilitate updates as needed.
- Adhere to all professional and ADL standards to ensure that an individual’s fundamental right to privacy and the agency’s right to keep its information confidential are protected. Work with Development team, and, as necessary, ADL senior leadership to develop appropriate policies and procedure to protect same.
Qualifications
Skills:
- Skillful writer and editor with the ability to deftly distill complex material for donor-facing materials.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written presentation skills.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills, with a demonstrated track record of establishing effective systems that foster collaboration and improve efficiency.
- Demonstrated analytical skills related to complex donor research.
- Background in one or more areas: Jewish communal programs, civil rights, immigrant rights, education, Israel, international affairs.
- Ability to think strategically, analytically and creatively.
- Proficiency in use of online research tools such as Lexis Nexis for Development Professionals, Wealth Engine, Morningstar Document Research, Foundation Directory Online along with numerous other tools and publications.
- Proficiency with data mining software, Word, Excel, Outlook and database management software.
- Knowledge of Enterprise and/or Salesforce donor databases helpful.
- Ability to work with highly sensitive, confidential information using excellent judgment at all times.
Work Experience:
- The ideal candidate has demonstrable experience in grant writing and donor and prospect research in a not-for-profit fundraising environment.
- Experience writing successful proposals securing multi-million-dollar grants.
- Experience meeting with senior leaders in institutional giving settings.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, or equivalent experience required.
Work Environment:
- ADL is a hybrid environment; this role may require 3 days in the office.
Compensation:
- This position has a salary range of $70,000 to $120,000. This salary range is reflective of a position based in Washington, D.C. Please note that actual salaries are commensurate with experience and reflect the budget for a given position, and since ADL has a location-based compensation structure, there may be a different range for candidates in other locations.
