Job Summary
The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day editorial operations of the newspaper. This includes managing the editorial staff, coordinating content, ensuring accuracy and quality, and meeting deadlines.
Essential Job Functions
Editorial Oversight:
- Supervise and coordinate the editorial staff, including reporters, writers, and editors.
- Write, review and edit articles, ensuring they adhere to the newspaper’s style and standards.
- Plan and manage the layout and content for each edition, including news stories, features, and editorials.
Content Management
- Develop and implement draft editorial policies and procedures.
- Oversee the production schedule and ensure deadlines are met.
- Collaborate with writers to develop story ideas and guide their research and writing.
- Find and utilize appropriate wire service content.
Quality Control
- Ensure accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in all published content.
- Address any issues related to content quality and integrity.
- Manage fact-checking and verification processes.
Staff Management
- Recruit, train, and mentor professional and volunteer staff.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to team members.
- Foster a collaborative and productive work environment.
- Meet with professional and volunteer staff, including writers, advertising sales agents, marketing director, graphic artist and other personnel to keep all team members updated on work progress
Strategic Planning
- Assist in developing the editorial strategy and vision for the newspaper.
- Analyze readership trends and adjust content strategies as needed.
- Stay informed about industry trends and innovations.
Collaboration
- Work closely with other departments, such as design and marketing, to ensure cohesive and effective publication.
- Communicate with external stakeholders, including freelance contributors and news agencies.
Position Requirements
- Attend staff meetings. .
- Attend JCC & Federation events .
- Skills necessary: research, knowledge of Microsoft Office and Internet, database usage experience, responsible, able to effectively communicate with JCC & Federation Constituents, knowledge of utilizing office equipment, superior organizational skills.
- Prior experience as a supervisor.
- Supervise staff.
- Education necessary: college
- Years of experience: At least 5 years in journalism
- Understanding of Jewish culture and traditions and geo-political dynamics related to Israel
Physical Requirements
- Lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10 pounds using proper body mechanics and/or available equipment as physically required—including but not limited to moving supplies and office furniture etc.
- Physical stamina – must be able to bend, kneel, and squat as required to maintain donor files and records, etc.
- Must be able to sit at a desk in an office environment at least 80% of the work shift. Ability to walk and standing intermittently for the remaining 20% of the assigned work day.
- Work is mainly performed in a weather controlled, air conditioned/heated facility. Facility is well lit and has minimal obstacles.
- Position uses typical office environment apparatus including computer, printer, fax machine and copier.
Reporting Relationships
- Reports to Chief Development & Engagement Officer with input from the CEO
- Responsible for supervising newspaper staff
